Garmin D2 Mach 2 Pro: inReach connectivity arrives on a pilot smartwatch

Garmin has unveiled the D2 Mach 2 Pro, a new top-end smartwatch aimed squarely at… pilots. For the first time in the D2 line, it includes inReach technology, so you can stay reachable via satellite and mobile networks without carrying a smartphone.

The launch is a surprise if you mainly associate Garmin with sports watches. Yet the brand also has a long-standing niche in aviation wearables. Until now, pilots who wanted Garmin’s inReach capability typically had to carry a separate, dedicated device alongside their watch. With the D2 Mach 2 Pro, those functions sit directly on the wrist: the watch can place calls, send messages, and share your location in real time through LiveTrack, all without needing a phone.

For emergencies, there’s an SOS button that sends an alert to the Garmin Response coordination centre, which operates 24/7. That’s arguably the product’s strongest selling point: a self-contained safety lifeline for pilots who frequently fly through areas where traditional mobile coverage is patchy or non-existent.

Display, materials and battery life

On the hardware side, the Garmin D2 Mach 2 Pro features a 1.4-inch (3.6 cm) AMOLED display designed to be exceptionally bright for improved readability in the cockpit. The 51 mm case is fitted with a titanium bezel finished in DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) Carbon Gray, and Garmin includes two QuickFit straps: one Chestnut leather strap and one silicone strap.

Speakers and microphones are built in, enabling calls to be handled directly from your wrist. Garmin also claims 24 days of battery life in standard watch mode.

A cockpit on your wrist at a premium price

As you’d expect, the D2 Mach 2 Pro comes loaded with pilot-focused tools and avionics features. It offers advanced aeronautical maps, links to aircraft avionics systems (via the Garmin Pilot app on iOS), aviation weather reports, PlaneSync compatibility, and voice commands.

A Red Shift mode switches the entire interface to red to keep it easy to read during night flights. The watch also adds in-flight biometric tracking, an LED flashlight with white and red light, and more than 100 sport profiles for everyday use beyond the cockpit.

Garmin’s pricing strategy may make mainstream buyers wince: the D2 Mach 2 Pro is priced at $1,549. To use satellite connectivity, you’ll also need an active subscription (pricing has not been disclosed). A few other limitations are worth noting: the avionics link is limited to iOS users, and neither LTE nor satellite services are available in every country.
