Whey Protein Prices Rise as It Takes on a New Role in Obesity Treatment with GLP-1 Analogues like Ozempic and Mounjaro

Whey protein-a supplement once tied almost exclusively to the fitness world-has started to play a fresh role in obesity treatment, while also becoming more expensive worldwide. Over recent months, the international price of whey protein has surged, driven by global shifts in eating habits, rising demand for high-protein diets, and mounting pressure across the dairy supply chain. The change is already being felt by people who rely on the supplement to support weight-loss plans, protect muscle, and improve metabolic health.

Dr Ramon Marcelino, a physician at the Hospital das Clínicas of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of São Paulo (HCFMUSP) and a leading figure in lifestyle medicine and obesity care, says the situation warrants close attention-particularly for patients using GLP-1 analogue medicines such as semaglutide and tirzepatide (Ozempic and Mounjaro).

“These medicines have revolutionised obesity treatment, but they brought an important concern: preserving muscle mass during the weight-loss process. As many patients start eating less, ensuring adequate protein intake becomes essential,” he explains.

Impacts of the increase in the price of whey protein

Whey protein has moved into the spotlight both for its convenience and for delivering a high protein concentration in a small volume-an especially useful feature for patients whose appetite has dropped sharply. “The problem is that the rise in global demand has pushed prices up. This creates a real challenge: precisely when protein becomes more clinically important, it may become less accessible for part of the population,” says Dr Ramon Marcelino.

In his view, this trend illustrates how closely medicine and the food market are now intertwined. “Anti-obesity treatments are changing not only how people lose weight, but also eating behaviour globally. That is already having a direct impact on production chains and the pricing of protein-rich foods,” he adds.

Alternatives to replace a serving of whey protein

To replace whey protein, you can build in everyday foods that are rich in protein. “Whey is an excellent tool, but it is not the only way to reach a protein target. With the right guidance, it is entirely possible to create a nutrition strategy based on foods or other lower-cost protein sources,” advises Dr Ramon Marcelino.

Some options include:

  1. Eggs: four large eggs provide around 24 g of protein, along with strong satiety and excellent value for money;
  2. Chicken breast: about 100 g delivers roughly 22 g to 25 g of protein, making it one of the most economical choices and very filling;
  3. Greek yoghurt with milk powder: this pairing provides a good protein density and is often well accepted;
  4. Isolated soya protein: cheaper than whey protein and increasingly used as a practical alternative;
  5. Tinned tuna: a versatile protein source that is ready to eat; be mindful of sodium content;
  6. Firm tofu: a solid plant-based option to vary the menu.

What should you consider when choosing a substitute?

According to Dr Ramon Marcelino, it is important to look beyond protein grams alone and weigh up factors such as convenience, digestibility, satiety, and long-term adherence. “The best strategy is the one the patient can keep up in day-to-day life. Often, simple and affordable foods deliver excellent results when spread well across the day,” he explains.

Even so, he notes that professional support matters to help prevent loss of lean mass-especially for people over 40, older adults, and patients using weight-loss medicines. “In today’s context, protein is no longer an aesthetic concern. It has become central to metabolic health, functional preservation, and quality of life during weight loss,” he concludes.
