Plenty of people who train on the mat know the feeling: posture improves, the back feels more supported, yes - but at some point the physique stops changing. Rather than working ever harder or putting yourself through painful HIIT sessions, a Californian training approach goes in the opposite direction: maximum muscle effort at minimum speed. That combination is exactly why it is currently so appealing to Pilates fans.

When Pilates no longer feels enough: why the body plateaus

At first, classic Pilates can bring huge progress. You stand taller, you can actually feel your abdominal muscles, and you notice your back becoming more stable. After a few months, though, the curve often levels off because the body adapts to the same movement patterns.

Without a gradual increase in challenge, both the muscles and the nervous system become accustomed to the routine. The exercises may still feel good, but they no longer demand enough to create visible change. That is when it can feel as though you are going nowhere.

  • prioritise good technique, not the heaviest resistance
  • if you feel sharp pain, adjust immediately rather than “pushing through”
  • accept the learning phase - the machine can feel unfamiliar at first

How to fit slow training into everyday life
