After a hard training session, stopping dead can make you feel even more stiff. A straightforward approach many personal trainers use is active recovery: a few minutes of easy walking, gentle cycling or mobility work, without turning the recovery period into another tough workout. Light stretching can feel soothing, but it does not make delayed onset muscle soreness disappear.
Why does muscle soreness only show up the next day?
Delayed onset muscle soreness typically appears 12 to 24 hours after an intense or unfamiliar effort and may peak between 24 and 72 hours. It is linked to the body’s response to microscopic damage caused by exercise, particularly during eccentric actions, where the muscle produces force while lengthening.
